Tech Desk: DuckDuckGo, one of the best privacy-focused search engines seems to be blocked by the network of Airtel and Jio connections. This came on notice to the public when several users said that they were unable to reach the website from their devices with the Airtel and Jio Network connections.
The US-based DuckDuckGo seems to be blocked days after 59 Chinese applications in India are already banned by government. The government said the apps presents a risk to the security of India, and were damaging to the sovereignty and independence of India. Nonetheless, neither government nor telco operators such as Airtel and Reliance Jio have explained why DuckDuckGo was blocked in India.
At the moment DuckDuckGo authority has already acknowledge that a large number are users are not able to use the search engine due to the block by network operators.
The Internet Shutdowns Twitter handle run by the Software Freedom Law Center tweeted that it was unable to access Airtel India connections to the DuckDuckGo web site.
Many of the users are also reported the same issue on facebook, instagram & social platforms like Reddit etc.
Meanwhile, some users have found out that VPN was operating with the privacy-focused search engine. It is not the first time telcos find themselves blocking the country’s privacy-oriented websites. Reliance Jio had selectively blocked access to Telegram ‘s website last year. VPN and proxy websites in India had already been blocked by the Mukesh Ambani-led company.
