India Live World News: Harvey J. Alter, Charles M. Rice and Michael Houghton won the Nobel Prize in Medicine this year. They discovered the Hepatitis C virus.

Among the 3 scientists are Alter and Rice American, Houghton English. In a statement, the Lobel Assembly said isolating the hepatitis C virus was a sign of outstanding success in the fight against the bacterial disease. This has led to the development of a specific testing method to fight the disease worldwide.

Alter conducted his research at the US National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA. Rice studied at the University of Washington in St. Louis, then moved to Rockefeller University in New York. Michael Houghton was at Chiron Corporation in California, now at the University of Alberta in Canada.

Hepatitis C can be diagnosed by doctors and scientists in the late eighties. Scientists have found that the hepatitis B virus is spread through the blood in a very small number of hepatitis patients in the world, whereas hepatitis A is not spread through blood, but through close contact with the patient. Research by Charles Rice has shown that hepatitis C alone can cause incurable hepatitis. If left untreated, the disease can be fatal. At first the liver is affected, then cirrhosis or terrible liver failure begins. Cancer at the end.
